Textured Oregon surfite pendant
Textured Oregon surfite pendant
This pendant has been handcrafted using traditional silversmithing skills and tools.
Crafted from sterling silver, the back plate has been hand sawn to complement the teardrop shape of the beautiful piece of coloured surfite. Texture has been added to the back plate in a similar fashion, complementing the lines of colours in the surfite. Each mark has been made by hand using metal punches - they have been oxidised to highlight them and make them stand out against the shine of the flat silver around the marks. A fine silver bezel frame holds the surfite in its grasp. A floating tube bail has been fused to the back to allow a chain to be fed through it. Comes with a 16” sterling silver chain.
Materials: Sterling silver, fine silver, surfite
Finish: Oxidised/polished
Surfite is a true champion of recycling, upcycling and sustainability born from the surfing world. When custom surfboards are made, they are covered in layers of fibreglass before liquid resin pools off, and it is from this excess that surfite is created, usually being disposed of in landfill. This Oregon surfite has been shaped into a teardrop cabochon which eloquently highlights the wonderful layers of colour horizontally banded across the shape.
All of my jewellery pieces are handcrafted by me using traditional silversmith skills at my little home studio, and are generally one of a kind in their design. I sometimes use findings which are not handmade, such as the chains I use for pendants but otherwise my jewellery is fashioned just from sheet silver and silver wire and old fashioned basic techniques and tools. I use ethically sourced gemstones where possible and all of the beachcombed items I use such as sea glass, sea pottery and sea plastic are genuine, mostly found by me (unless kindly donated) and smoothed naturally by the sea predominantly off the coast of England. My pieces are hallmarked when necessary as a precious metal by the London Assay Office with my maker’s mark – I use mostly sterling silver for my handmade jewellery and these are hallmarked when they are above the weight of 7.78g.
